John Paul Jones has taken part in a new multi-artist version of "When the Levee Breaks" for charity. Led Zeppelin, with Jones on bass, recorded the song in 1971 for their untitled fourth album. This recording is to raise funds for Peace Through Music and its partners Conservation International, American Rivers, WWF, Reverb and the Playing for Change Foundation.
Commenting on the song, Jones says, “It seems that little has changed since 1927, or even 2005 with [Hurricane] Katrina. It’s still a really powerful track, both musically and lyrically.”
The song was written by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie in 1929 in response to the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927.
Jones plays bass along with Derek Trucks and Robbie Robertson's son Sebastian Robertson on guitars, Susan Tedeschi of the Tedeschi-Trucks Band on vocals, Jane's Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins and many other musicians from around the world
