The Ugly Side Effects Of Not Brushing Your Teeth At Night

We all know we're supposed to brush our teeth twice a day, but a lot of us get lazy before bed and skip brushing. Eat This, Not That! spoke to dentist Dr. Rashi Gupta and got the blow-by-blow on what kind of havoc we may be wreaking in our mouths by not brushing at night. He explained that at night, saliva production slows down and leaves our teeth with lowered defenses against acids from foods and bacteria that lives in the human mouth. This can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, bad breath, and much worse.

  • Bacteria from our mouths can also enter the bloodstream and make it to the heart, causing an infection in the valves
  • Gum disease can trigger a rise in blood sugar levels, which can be very serious for people with diabetes
  • Untreated cavities and gum disease can both lead to infection and tooth loss
  • Some research even points to a link between tooth decay and dementia
