Anthrax's Scott Ian Had to Tell Metallica to Sleep in Their Rehearsal Space

Metallica arrived on the East Coast in 1983 to record its debut album, Kill 'Em All, not knowing that their manager hadn't secured a hotel for them to rest their weary heads.

Unknowingly saddled with the task of breaking the news to the up-and-coming San Francisco-area thrash band was Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian, also a client of manager Jon Zazula

Zazula had asked Ian and original Anthrax bassist Danny Lilker to greet Metallica when they arrived in Queens, Ian said in a recent interview.

"They were rolling in, driving a U-Haul across the country. They load their gear in the room and they set up, and they're like, 'Okay, where are we staying?' I'm like, 'Jonny didn't tell you? He didn't tell you? Maybe you ought to call Jonny.'"

Ian said Anthrax quickly offered Metallica a refrigerator, toaster and "anything to help."

"We were fast friends from that point on."

Ian is on the road promoting his new book Access All Areas: Stories From a Hard Rock Life.
